10 Things That Every Grieving Person Needs To Hear

  1. You are NOT going crazy.

Grief affects you mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually. Your thoughts are all over the place in this time of grief. You just need time to sort things out. Be patient with yourself. This is normal.

  2. There is no "RIGHT WAY" to grieve.

Everyone responds to a loss differently. Some keep their feelings to themselves, some need to talk about it. There is no instruction book to grieving because everyone handles their loss as they can. There are many dynamics that influence the way one grieves, so each loss is a specific situation. Deal with the emotions and feelings of grief as they come and you'll do fine.

  3. You Don't Have to Carry This Alone.

Allow yourself to lean on the strength of others, allowing them to help you with the changes that come along with loss. Find people and groups of support to help you on your grief journey.

  4. It's OK to laugh again.

When you first find yourself smiling or laughing, you may feel guilty for feeling happy. Joy is an emotion just as well as sadness. God gave us many emotions to cover life experiences and it's ok to feel them. Do not feel bad because you are feeling better than you did originally. You are beginning to heal from the pain.

  5. Your feelings are valid.

Whether you feel sad, hopeful, lonely, relief, confusion, or happiness, allow yourself to feel that. And don't judge yourself because you feel the way you do.

  6. Healing Does not mean You will forget.

There is a fear that can come that causes a griever to wonder if they will forget their loved one. Healing will be prevented if this thought continues to be present. You will not forget your loved one- they are in your heart and memories. Go ahead and allow yourself to heal.

  7. Small Steps are Still Progress.

There are days that it is all you can do to complete the normal daily tasks you need to complete. Any movement in the positive is good. The smallest of steps bring progress. Keep doin' it!

  8. God Has Not Abandoned You.

You may not feel His presence but, He is there with you. He sees every tear and hears every prayer. Give all your worries and cares to Him. "The Lord is close to the broken-hearted; He rescues those whose spirits are crushed "(Psalm 34:18 NLT).

  9. Your Story is Not Over.

Loss changes your story but it is not the end of that story. What you see is one season and there are more seasons to come that hold blessings and joy. Writing your story continues with you picking up the pen. What would you imagine that can be reality?

  10. Hope is Possible.

Look around you to someone who has gotten healing from their loss. They went through the same feelings and emotions as you did. And they are different now. They have healed and are handling the changes that came with their loss. There is a way to have a New Normal that can bring a better quality of life than pain does. Hope in this fact.
